Example of Using the Syllabus Format for an Internship

COURSE -- Post Graduate course in Genealogy
(suggested 16 week internship) (4 semester credit hours)
Description: Student will investigate and determine, if possible, who is the father of Henry [name redacted] -- either Matthew [name redacted], a knight and major general in Oliver Cromwell’s or the Parliamentary army or Thomas [name redacted], a knight and the Vice Governor General of the Massachusetts Bay Colony, and who their parents are, so the line can continue.
Purpose: To apply all research avenues available and solve a mystery that has baffled past professionals.
Prerequisites: completed 5 post-graduate genealogical courses in research.
Restrictions: as required by the one's advisor or the Graduation Committee – none known at this time.
When participants have completed this course, they will know how to:
1. Review and appraise what evidence or information exists and determine other possible ways that were available at the time to discover clues that may open the door for this discovery.
2. Identify historical means of additional information
3. Explain research steps in an orderly fashion step by step
4. Apply past learning to present situation
5. Enlist the help of others including one’s advisor and the internship instructor
6. Present a critical review and final conclusions

Initiate Contact with Instructor, discuss and begin the research
The student should initiate an initial telephone conference with the instructor within one week of enrollment to create a realistic plan of action for the course. This initial contact will help familiarize the student and the instructor with one another, and permit the transmission of clear expectations for the completion of the course requirements. Periodic telephone interaction is required, at the student’s expense, and should be continued for the duration of the course. Please keep in mind the possible difference in time zones.
E-mail Communications: Frequent e-mail communications between the student and the instructor should be initiated and continued for the duration of the course.
Alternative Communications: Students may send communications and materials via postal service, as appropriate.
The final report will be graded on four criteria:
Focus and Rationale (25 points)
Practical Application (25 points)
Knowledge, Facts and Details (25 points)
Grammar and Organization (25 points)
